Screening interview

Screening interviews are popular with large companies in the initial stages of their recruitment process. They allow employers to filter out large numbers of candidates in a short amount of time. In a nutshell, screening interviews:

  • can be conducted by phone or video
  • include strength-based questions, such as ‘Why are you suitable for the job?’
  • include competency-based questions, such as ‘Describe a situation when you delivered good customer service.’
  • You prepare for a screening interview as you would any other type of interview, by researching the company, practicing answers and dressing smartly, but there are some other things to be aware of:

  • ensure you have a reliable phone line/signal or internet connection
  • check the equipment that you will be using works
  • make sure that you have a suitable background for video calls – tidy and plain
  • have a trial run with a friend or family member.
