Competency-based interview

In a competency-based interview the interviewer will ask you to talk about times and situations in your day to day life when you’ve actually used the skills they are looking for. Think about some examples of these and use the STARR strategy to help you prepare.

  • Situation: Start by setting the scene, describe the situation.
  • Task: Describe what you had to do.
  • Action: Describe how you set about completing the task.
  • Result: Describe the outcome and how it went, e.g was it successful or were there any difficulties, including any feedback you received.
  • Reflection: Describe what you learned during this experience and what you might do differently next time.
